Critical Mutations_ The crisis: so many interpretations, so many debates. So much suffering. Amongst the many ways of reading it is also the way offered by artistic creation,ever-sensitive to the surrounding context, anticipating emergencies and problems with a visionary spirit, with poetry, public criticism and utopia. One has to think of the recently deceased Chris Marker, a master of the poetic documentary and film-essay.

Even the universe of authors with a predilection for the beyond, for innovation in languages, reveals a range of takes on today: on the one hand an epoch-making crisis bursts forth, of which the artists reveal a panorama of ill-being and unrest; on the other, creativity is suggested, mockery, beauty, as antidotes to a colour that seems to make everything look grey. In the 2012 selection (the best of the best in 15 countries throughout the world), loss of work, the environmental emergency, memory, earthquakes, desolation, prison, death are some of the topics, in the form of documentaries or noir fairy-tales. But the mark of the surreal and the perturbing brings together crime news and invention, the claw mark and graphics in a fertile hybrid, with allegories of the time we live in “apnoea”, waiting. And in the end comes up with a fruitful, inventive mutation of new ways and worlds, and so still with a smile.

Alongside the works are the encounters: with the poetic travels of Gérald Assouline; the feminist commitment of Evelin Stermitz; the visionary and poetic 3D of Giuliana Cunéaz. And again: the archives and their digitalization; Mozart in Leonardo Carrano’s animations: the surreal universe of Donato Sansone; Lacombe’s Africa. And the homage to the prematurely deceased Giuseppe Bertolucci, to whom this edition is dedicated.

Lastly, the awards, thanks also to unprecedented forms of solidarity and fund collecting. A crisis – certainly: also an opportunity for mutation and not necessarily and totally negative. A mutation in form as a preparation for the critical mutation of thought and action in this present and this future which are so uncertain
