Cinématons by Gérard Courant
Up to today, 28/08, Cinématons constitute what is considered to be the longest film in the history of the cinema. Shot from1978 onwards and still ongoing, silent, a fixed camera, standard duration 3’25”, they bring us a gallery of appearances which, not by chance, take the name of “photomatons” (instant passport photos), adapting it to the cinema. The series, conceived and made by Gérard Courant, began on film and is now being continued in video; since no. 2332 onwards they have been in black and white only. The characters are asked to appear freely in front of the film camera. Their only constriction is the duration.
Gérard Courant (Lyons, 1951), known in particular for Cinématons, has also made numerous film diaries testifying to meetings and travels, documentaries and full-length films. He is a complete author who is master of all the phases in his creative work. Since 1975 he has lived in Paris, where his insatiable passion for the cinema has been nurtured by important encounters and experiences of independent and experimental work. He has a deep knowledge of the cinema, about which he has written books, essays and articles. He is also the author of books of poetry and has received a good deal of attention from critics for his highly original contribution to the cinema.
